"바람직한 과학과 인문학의 관계는 무엇인가. 그리고 둘 간의 관계가 인류의 복지에 왜 중요한가?" 인류를 곤혹스럽게 하는 많은 문제들 - 인종 갈등, 군비경쟁, 인구과밀, 낙태, 환경, 기아 - 은 자연과학, 사회과학, 인문학적 지식의 통합 없이는 이룰 수 없습니다. 이들 다양한 학문들을 모두 아우르는 지식을 통해서만이 우리가 살고 있는 세계의 근본적인 문제에 대해 - 근시안적 대안을 제시하거나 특정 이데올로기, 종교적 도그마의 시각으로 바라보지 않고 - 적시할 수 있습니다. Every college student should be able to answer the following question: What is the relation between science and the humanities, and how is it important for human welfare? Every public intellectual and political leader should be able to answer that as well. Already half the legislation coming before the United States Congress contains important scientific and technological components. Most of the issues that vex humanity daily - ethnic conflict, arms escalation, overpopulation, abortion, environment, endemic poverty, to cite several most consistently before us - cannot be solved without integrating knowledge from the natural sciences with that of the social sciences and humanities. Only fluency across the boundaries will provide a clear view of the world as it really is, not as seen through the lens of ideologies and religious dogmas or commanded by myopic response to immediate need.
